Back to Black

My collection "Back to Black," based on the song by Amy Winehouse, encompasses the struggle and cyclical nature of addiction and abusive relationships. The collection draws inspiration from Winehouse's relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil and the toxicity of their time together.

Many of the design details in my collection are extracted from 1950's fashion, both men's suiting and womenswear. The collection is meant to represent the seemingly inescapable abuse that a woman faces in a domestically violent or emotionally abusive relationship with a man, hence the dominance of menswear-inspired pieces throughout the collection. Certain looks empower the independence of the woman, featuring primarily feminine silhouettes and details, while others assert the dominance of the man through the presence of menswear-inspired suiting and accessories.

Board games and patterns derived from adult coloring books act as both a solution and metaphor for the subculture of addicts and those who find themselves within abusive relationships. Board and playing card games almost always start as innocent and playful but can quickly turn violent, competitive, and manipulative the same way a relationship might turn from loving to abusive. Contrasting the unpleasant nature of these games lies a temporary solution for those stuck in the seemingly endless cycle of addiction: a momentary escape from reality, allowing for a playful time with friends around the table.

"Back to Black" intends to highlight the complicated nature of these issues while inspiring those who find themselves feeling hopeless to break free from their struggles by seeking the necessary help to move forward. A portion of the collection's proceeds will be donated to American Addiction Centers and the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Included in each purchase are a "Back to Black" adult coloring book and handwritten inspirational message with resources for addiction and domestic violence organizations.
